What is interim management?

Interim management of a care service refers to the temporary placement of an experienced manager in a care service to provide leadership, guidance, and support to the staff and residents during a period of transition or crisis. This can occur when there is a sudden vacancy in the management position, or when there are issues that need to be resolved urgently. This unfortunately, is a regular occurrence in the care sector and sadly something that usually happens at times of difficulty.

Rapid Response and Portfolio-Wide Quality Assurance Support

A care provider approached Delphi following the receipt of a Notice of Proposal (NOP) from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). At that time, they were managing the matter internally with legal support, but they expressed concern about the wider portfolio and potential risks across their other services.
To provide reassurance and early intervention, the provider commissioned Delphi to carry out Mock Inspections across three additional homes. Our team completed all three inspections within a week, delivering detailed reports including Ratings and tailored Recommendations to support ongoing improvements.
Two weeks later, the provider reached out again. The CQC had returned to the service originally issued the NOP, raising concerns that required urgent attention, specifically, that planned actions had not been fully implemented, and all care plans required immediate review.

Delphi’s Response:

Recognising the urgency and seriousness of the situation, a Delphi expert was on-site the very next day and remained for seven consecutive days, including over the weekend.
During this time, we conducted a comprehensive review of incidents, triangulated findings across care plans, risk assessments, and daily records, and worked closely with the team to identify key learning opportunities. Our focus was on embedding outcome-driven care, strengthening person-centred planning, and ensuring risk assessments were meaningful and effective in reducing avoidable harm.
Through this intensive support, Delphi helped the provider regain control, drive improvements where needed most, and strengthen compliance and care quality across the service.
